Making a Medal Using the Sand Casting Process

This video, produced in conjunction with the exhibition The Pursuit of Immortality: Masterpieces from the Scher Collection of Portrait Medals, describes the making of a medal with the process known as sand casting. A silent version will be on display in The Frick Collection galleries from May 9 to September 10, 2017.

Who is this woman whose elaborate, almost theatrical, costume inspired an early eighteenth-century writer to give the Renaissance beauty her fantastical name? In this lecture, the guest curator of the special exhibition The Poetry of Parmigianino's "Schiava Turca"  presents a new interpretation of the work.
